New Puppy's Upcycled Cabinet
Almost since the beginning, New Puppy has been using salvage wood for the gallery. Our bowtruss ceiling is Douglas Fir, and we're always searching for salvage Doug Fir to use whenever possible.
So when we wanted a cabinet to conveniently store bathroom necessities, it was natural to use this wood. As a public space, we also needed a cabinet that would be tamper-proof. So David Johnson created this rustic unit with a tiny skeleton key hole reusing our salvage 1x6. Looks like it wouldn't open if you weren't looking closely. (Mouse over to see a close-up.)
The rough sawn Douglas Fir is a little course for a functional cabinet though. To keep the surface somewhat splinter free, David scrubbed the wood and applied the slightest bit of shelac. And you can't use rough sawn wood for shelving -- the rustic exterior actually is hiding a smooth FSC birchply interior. (Mouse over to open the cabinet.)
